Sensory Processing

The most important lesson of the module.

Sensory integration is the process through which the brain interprets and organises signals coming from the environment and from the body so that we can respond appropriately. When sensory information is not processed efficiently, a child may respond very strongly to certain stimuli or may need more intense stimulation to register them.

đź‘€ OBSERVE

Think about a child who covers their ears when the room becomes noisy, constantly needs to move, dislikes particular textures, seeks strong physical contact, or becomes overwhelmed in busy environments. Ask: What sensory information might this child be responding to?

🌱 TRY IT

Observe one child for five minutes. Do not intervene or diagnose. Simply write down what happened immediately before the behaviour.
